Abstract
Objectives£ºThe purposes of this study were, firstly to estimate the prevalence of alcohol dependence(AD) among industrial workers in an urban area of Korea, secondly to examine the relationship between alcohol dependences and sociodemographic characteristics of subjects, and thirdly to analyse risk factors for alcohol dependence.
Method£ºThe subjects were 613 industrial workers in an urban area of Korea. Data was collected by visiting the workplace, using CES-D(Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale), MAST(Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test), and questionaires developed by the authorship. We analysed the data focusing on the difference between drinkers without AD and with probable AD.
Results£ºAmong the 613-completed responders, 71%(male 77.5%, female£º57.1%) of industrial workers were drinkers. Prevalence of the probable AD was 4.7%(male£º4.5%, female£º4.6%), lower than that of general population. But the male to female ratio of probable AD was 1 to 1, which ratio was lower than previous studies(three to one). There were no significant differences between drinkers with probable AD and drinkers without AD in monthly income, year of education, smoking. But in female workers, there were more probable AD in single or divorced than in married, and most of them were in twenties. Risk factor of probable AD was depressive symptoms in both male and female.
Conclusion£ºPrevalence of probable AD among industrial workers was lower than general population, but probable AD in female workers were relatively higher than in male workers. Depressive symptoms were proved to be risk factor of AD, and probable AD were more prevalent in female workers without spouses. It suggests that screening and educational system for alcohol use and depression should be constructed in industry, and more attention to female workers in twentieth should be paid.
